He earned an Engineering degree at Virginia Tech and worked at Lutron Electronics, the undisputed leader in lighting controls, holding jobs from product management to work as their quality control and process control manager and managing the purchasing department of a custom shade company Lutron owns. During this period he continued to saw custom sized lumber on weekends for local craftsmen and build custom furniture, and he began to create wood butcher blocks to customer requests. The tremendous demand for Grothouse butcher blocks quickly became a full time job for Paul.
